In partnership with the landowner, Tallgrass designed, permitted, and constructed a wetland mitigation bank on a 109-acre farmed wetland in the Town of Palmyra in Jefferson County, Wisconsin.
Located in the Rock Service Basin, this site was a farmed agricultural field for several decades. In 2022, Tallgrass began restoring the site’s wetland hydrology by removing the artificial drainage features, including stop log, sump, pump, and drain tile.
The Rock River Basin is designated as having the second most contaminated groundwater in the state, due in large part to pesticides and nitrogen from agriculture. The entire site was planted with high-diversity, native wet meadow, and pollinator seed mixes. Bare-root trees and shrubs are also planned to be planted on a portion of the site.
The site will continue to be managed and monitored by Tallgrass for the next ten years.
Over time, the hydrology of soils at the site will become saturated for a period of the year long enough to allow wet meadow and hardwood/coniferous swamp plant communities to return to much of the site.
Permittees seeking fresh (wet) meadow, shrub-carr, or hardwood swamp wetland mitigation credits may contact us for availability.
